The 1933 race introduced the King of the Mountains competition and this was the second year time bonuses were offered for stage wins. Another small fact is that the tour had been run counter-clockwise since 1913 and in 1933 it returned to a clockwise running.
General Classification Winner: Roger Lapébie (France)
King of the Mountains Winner: Felicien Vervaecke (Belgium) riding as an individual
Team Classification Winner: France
The complete Belgian team (including 1936 and 1939 winner, Sylvere Maes, withdraw from the race because of "French chauvinism". Complaints from the Belgian team included of French spectators throwing stones at the Belgian team, closing train crossings, and throwing pepper in the eyes, and being punished unreasonable strictly (adding extra time in the standing) while French riders were hardly punished at all while being helped.
